Portrait FAQ

1. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
One of the most pressing questions I get from my clients is about what they (and perhaps the others in the session) should wear. The possibilities are endless as are the chances to pick clothes that don’t work well in a photo. A few general rules to consider when picking outfits are as follows. First, and most important, wear something that you are comfortable in; while you certainly can buy new clothes for the session I’ve found that clothes you are familiar with make for better photos. Second, stay away from dramatic patterns (e.g. floral and zig-zag) as these tend to distract from the subject of the photos. Finally, don’t try to match with any other subjects in the session rather try to complement their selected outfit.

2. WHERE SHOULD WE TAKE THE PHOTOS?
We recommend selecting locations that are special to you and whoever else may be in the session as these are typically locations in which you will feel comfortable and will have a significant meaning. For some people these places could be your home, a boat, a favorite park, or a favorite scenic location. The Washington, D.C. Metro Area also has thousands of places for a variety of sessions from the National Mall, the US Botanical Gardens, the US Capitol, and many other historic venues. If you are having a hard time choosing a location or would like some input from me, feel free to contact me prior to your session!

3. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT THE SESSION?
During our initial conversation(s) I like to take a while to discuss your expectations and vision for our photo session including things you like, your photographic style, and things that may make you uncomfortable. Once we arrive at the session, I’ll take a few initial photos that are more posed as an icebreaker but after that I expect you to run, jump, and overall have a good time! Remember that our goal is to take awesome photos that are awesomely you!

4. WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO THE SESSION?
We encourage our clients to bring items to the session that represents them, their family, and/or their hobbies. For example, if you enjoy traveling bringing some antique luggage that represents travel would be awesome and will really add to the photos. Outside of props, we recommend bringing a few changes of clothes (if you want to do some different looks), a hairbrush, makeup, and anything else you made need to freshen up during the session.

5. CAN I BRING SOMEONE WITH ME?
Absolutely! Many people are more relaxed when a family members and/or friends are present. The more relaxed you are, the better the images we will be able to create together!

6. WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE FOR MY PORTRAIT SESSION?
To ensure that everything runs smoothly, please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to your scheduled time. Feel free to use this time to freshen up your makeup, hair, and clothing. Arriving early also ensures that we are able to photograph for the entire session.

7.HOW LONG DOES THE SESSION LAST?
Our basic portrait session lasts approximately two hours.

8. CAN WE HAVE PHOTOS DONE AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS?
Absolutely! The only thing to keep in mind is that having multiple locations, particularly those that aren’t close, will lessen the amount of time we have to take photos during the session.

9. WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE SESSION FEE?
The session fee covers approximately two hours of time with the photographer, individual editing and basic retouching of the final images, and a password-protected online image gallery.

10. WHEN WILL WE GET TO SEE OUR PHOTOGRAPHS?
